The European Council decided to impose restrictive measures on three additional individuals and one entity in relation to actions undermining democracy and the rule of law in Guatemala. The EU cited continued misuse of legal processes and intimidation of elected officials, civil society, and the judiciary by the designees.
Specifically, the Foundation against Terrorism (FCT), along with its president Ricardo Rafael Méndez Ruiz Valdes and legal representative Raúl Amílcar Falla Ovalle, were sanctioned for systematically persecuting journalists, judges, and others.
Moreover, Judge Jimi Rodolfo Bremer Ramírez of the Tenth Criminal Court was sanctioned for his role in the persecution of media figures and legal professionals.
