FATF Publishes New Risk Indicators for the Gaming and Gambling Sectors

  • Posted by: Andreas Pavlou

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has published new risk indicators for the gaming and gambling sectors, aimed at supporting governments, regulators and private sector entities in identifying and responding to money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing (ML/TF/PF) risks.

The publication follows a FATF project drawing on contributions from more than 80 jurisdictions, as well as industry bodies and researchers. It highlights the evolving financial crime risks associated with the growth of online and cross-border gambling, the increasing use of multiple payment methods, and illegal and unlicensed gambling activities. FATF identifies illegal gambling as one of the most significant risks facing the sector.

The risk indicators highlight behavioural, transactional and operational warning signs, including the use of multiple accounts and payment methods under different identities, discrepancies between customer and payment information, suspicious betting and transaction patterns, and complex ownership structures that may obscure beneficial ownership.
